This is the first time it has happened that a team of 08 men and 08 women were selected and sponsored by Sports Authority of India (SAI) to take part in an International reputed competition and it is indeed a matter of pride for the complete Fencing Fraternity of India. This competition is one of the most important competitions, keeping in mind the upcoming Asian Games 2022 and beginning of a new Olympic Cycle.

Very interestingly, a young fencer from Haryana Ms. Taniksha Khatri has outshined everyone by herstupendous performance in the Women’s category. In the preliminary round of 64, she defeated Eleonara Marchi De of Italy, the final score being 15/14 on 28.01.22. Ms. Eleonara was a higher ranked fencer than Taniksha, whereas Taniksha was given the 41st seed, Eleonara was 24th. In the final round of 64, Taniksha caused a major upset by defeating 8th Ranked Jacques Andre Coquin of France, final score of which was 15-14. After a very close fight in the round of 32, Taniksha unfortunately lost to Margh Vincenti Guzzi of USA, the final score was 14-15 on 30.01.2022. Taniksha fought till the last bout. Her performance being one of the best performances of any Indian Women Fencer at Grand Prix Level Competition.

An 18-year-old performing so well at the International Senior level is truly commendable. Such amazing performance, determination and confidence shown by Taniksha deserves a lot of appreciation and recognition. She is surely a major hope for Indian Fencing Contingent for 2024 Paris Olympics. Hopefully, Indian fencing will see a lot of such incredible performances from young fencers in the future
