The sport of fencing was introduced in India in the 1970s. The FENCING ASSOCIATION OF INDIA (FAI) was formed in 1974. However, structured development and competitions were initiated only in the late 1990s.
As the National Sports Federation, affiliated to the International Fencing Federation and Fencing Confederation of Asia and recognised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, FAI is the supreme authority regarding the governance and development of fencing in India. Currently, FAI has 25 State/ UT Associations and 1 Institution as affiliated member units.
